Single Review | Team Waterpolo – Letting Go
Almost everything I know about Team Waterpolo, I know from the press release and looking them up online. I know they’re from Preston, they formed in 2007, that ‘Letting Go’ is the song that got them attention on Myspace in its original demo version. But there’s another thing I know about Team Waterpolo, which I learned from listening to this song — they make great pop music.
‘Letting Go’ is three-and-a-half minutes of electronic bounciness that simply never — well, never lets go. It has the sort of magnificently catchy beat that makes you want to nod your head or dance around, and even manages to throw in a load of ‘do-do-do’s without sounding cheesy — and the jolly atmosphere means that it might take you a moment to realise that Fred Davis is actually singing about a failed relationship (‘Never wanna be more than a friend to you-do-do do-do’).
Team Waterpolo rival Hot Chip for making dance-pop that transcends all notions of genre. I can’t think of a higher compliment to pay this song.
